2020-05-17 Weekend Updates
From MusicTechWiki
What's up Music Tech Students!
We hope you've been having a nice weekend. Although, with this shelter at home lifestyle, the days kind of blend into each other. I guess today is Sunday?
How has your technology been holding out? Have you noticed the Internet is slower, in general? (not surprising, I guess)
Comcast was down for over 6 hours a couple days ago. I was afraid of that! (could have been worse, and longer, I guess) Really reminded me of the importance to be able to
- Work offline
- Have a solid cellular hotspot for connecting, even with a slow Internet service
My MacBookPro TOTALLY bugged out, crashed and locked up! Fortunately, I had everything backed up, including an SSD Boot Drive, so it was not a data loss disaster. (just a 3 hour inconvenience)
Yesterday, my iLok hardware dongle BROKE - so NO Pro Tools right now. I ordered a NEW iLok but won't have it until Tuesday morning May 17th at 10:30AM.
Late Work
I've been getting a lot of messages from students about falling behind. My global response to all of you is: DON'T WORRY about it.
- I don't grade down or penalize your score for late work
- Even though most of the assignments and quizzes in Canvas close 1 month after the DUE DATE, we can still work out a deal even if you are more than 1 month late. (which, actually, would be VERY rare)
Getting Help
IMHO, the best way to get help is to connect with me LIVE in Real Time. I've expanded the times Im available and also made it so you can book with only 2 hours in advance: https://go.oncehub.com/brucetambling-meeting
You can also TEXT or CALL me directly and a lot of times I help you immediately. 408-313-9006
The next best way to get help is to contact support@brucetambling.com. We are fortunate to have Music Tech Support Ninja Al Ruffinelli helping to respond to these support tickets. He can even login to your computer and fix stuff remotely.
Grading Assignments
I've been using some new assignment types and grading workflows. So, if you still have some assignments submitted that have NOT yet been graded, please stand by. Those should be up-to-date in a couple days
Course Exercise Files vs. Student Generated Content
A frequently asked question is "Can I work on my own music?" "Can I mix my on songs, instead of the textbook exercise files?" The answer is OF COURSE you can work on your own music! That's what it is, ultimately, all about. That being said, the exercise files for various assignments have been created and curated with great care. So, we recommend you study and experiment with those too! We believe it's super valuable for students to listen to and practice with world class professional recorded audio tracks.
Multitrack Audio Production Checklist Manifesto
This might be more info than you're interested in right now, but I'm pretty excited about the direction this project is going:
- Multitrack_Audio_Production_Checklist_Manifesto
- This is becoming a condensed one sheet checklist being pulled from info on these pages:
- It's a lot of info, but SUPER important!
- This inspired me to create a spreadsheet to take inventory of some of our multitrack library:
- Multitracks - Google
- Line #73 in the spreadsheet "BryceDrew-LuckyNumber" shows the initial fruits of our team applying the MixPrep checklist
- Another way to access thee files is here:
- "BryceDrew-LuckyNumber" is the 5th song in this list. Download theZIP file to check it out! Producer Greg Wells is AMAZING!
Rewiring My Studio 5-17-2020
- I'm going to completely tear ALL my wires and equipment out and REWIRE everything in my studio in San Jose!
- Like, right NOW! (7:30PM) Ya baby. Let's DO this!
- It's gonna be GREAT!
- See you on the other side!
