Examples of Good Podcasts

How to Prep for Podcast

  1. Send Prospective Podcast Guests an email invitation
    • With a link to Schedule Once
  2. Guest Host MTW Profile Page
  3. Podcast Guest Show Notes (DEV)
    • Either in MTW or Evernote
  4. Contact Guest
    • Gather information
    • EPK
    • Any and all information (websites, social media channels etc.
  5. Contact Guest Host
    • Share in about guest

Podcast Admin Preproduction

  1. Create Music Tech Wiki Episode Show Notes Page for Music Tech Student Podcast
  2. Invite and confirm guests and co-Hosts
    • Send Reminders
  3. Promote and Market the Zoom Webinar date
    • Promote Slido App to collect questions before the show

Preflight Setup

  1. If possible, have guests do a sound check before the show and send us a WAV file
  2. Remind guests to use headphones
  3. Soundcheck with guests 15-30 minutes before the show
  4. Turn on Zoom Webinar features
    • Allow Panelists to turn on video
    • Allow Panelists to share screen

Remote Recording Platforms

  1. Regardless of remote recording platforms all guests will also record themselves locally as a double-ender
  2. For Audio Only Podcasts with no live audience we use either:
    1. Squadcast
      • More rock solid and user friendly to guests and hosts
    2. Riverside
      • Has more features but the system is buggy
  3. For Video Podcasts

Gather Collect Media Assets

  1. Send Dropbox File Upload Request to guests and co-hosts
  2. Create a new Parent Folder
    YYYY-MM-DD Podcast Name
  3. Collect all audio/video files
    • YYYY-MM-DD Podcast Name Source Files
      • YYYY-MM-DD Podcast Name Local Audio Recordings
      • YYYY-MM-DD Podcast Name Zoom Files
    • Consider renaming Source Audio Files
      • YYYY-MM-DD Podcast Name - Person Name

Pro Tools Session Create

  1. Import all files into Pro Tools
    • 24 bit 48k Session
    • Participants and Master
  2. Rename Tracks
  3. Align and synchronize all clips
  4. Consolidate Clips

Pro Tools Editing

For additional info, look at the Podcast Editing Basics

  1. Create New Pro Tools Session
  2. Compress Timeline
    • Pacing, Rhythm
    • Telling the story
  3. Identify and copy "stinger" quotes, quips, and blurbs
  4. Finish Editing
  5. Update and Edit Show Notes concurrently
    • Be on the lookout for references to people and things we want to link in the show notes
    • It's much more efficient to document the links now instead of waiting to come back and find them later
  6. Strip Silence
    • But be aware of room tone
  7. Use RX for noise reduction and audio restoration as needed
  8. Check every edit in headphones for pops and clicks
  9. Use Clip Gain to optimize levels in each track
  10. Add intro VO narration
    • Add highlight teaser clips from engaging parts later in the show
  11. Add opening theme music
  12. Add additional music throughout the show
    • Document all music used for copyright clearance
  13. Add closing music theme

Mixing and Mastering

  1. Gain Stage
      • Clip Gain
    • No Plugins yet
  2. Add plugins on all Tracks
    • Mix to taste
  3. Route All Tracks to a Stereo Audio Track
  4. Print the Mix internally
  5. Export and Convert the finished mix to MP3
    • Stereo
    • 256kbt/s

Upload to Libsyn

  1. Include Episode Artwork
  2. Copy Shownotes from MTW into Libsyn

Check and Edit Podpage

  1. Podpage Login
  2. Confirm all data correctly pushed from Libsyn
    • Check all links in Podpage Episode

Check Episode on Podcast Platforms

  1. Spotify
  2. Apple Podcasts
  3. Etc.

Music Tech Wiki Episode Page

Publishing the MusicTech student podcast always starts on musictechwiki. That's the master server that we use as a repository for all of the images and all of the podcast notes. From musictechwiki we will push and publish the podcast to the various channels.

Video For Later

Video Production

Generally speaking, whenever we record a Zoom Webinar, there is probably an opportunity to leverage and repurpose a video clip.

  1. Review the video footage to decide if there are any video scenes worth sharing
  2. If any of the podcast is intended for Video Production
    • Import Consolidated Audio files from Pro Tools into a new Premier Pro Project
  3. Import Video Files into Premiere Pro
  4. Synchronize all Audio and Video Files
  5. Export Premiere Pro Project as AAF

Premier Pro Editing

  1. Ripple edit dead time and bloopers
  2. Select camera angles
  3. Don't spend time with detailed audio editing
    • We will do that in Pro Tools
  4. Just get everything in proper sequence
    • with clips positioned in the Timeline
  5. Graphics, B-Roll, Lower 3rds, Credits etc.
    • will be done later
